Triggers—we ALL have them. For some of us, our triggers have been with us seemingly since day one. But as we grow and change, it’s not uncommon for new triggers to pop up. The problem is, these triggers can start to rule our life if we let them. Once we’re aware of our specific emotional triggers, however, we can start to manage them.
Not only that, we can actually use triggers to accelerate our growth, rather than letting them hold us back.
Some of your triggers may already be very obvious to you. For others, you may not have made the connection between a certain emotion or situation and the response it elicits in you.
Here’s a quick way to identify your triggers: tune into your body. Emotional triggers have a way of manifesting physically. So, if you notice things like your heart pounding, your palms sweating, or an upset stomach when something comes up, these are signs it has triggered you.
One example? Let’s say you’ve put in a LOT of work on a presentation you’re really proud of. You give this presentation, expecting praise and applause, only to find your efforts fell flat. Your presentation is criticized, and the audience disapproved of your ideas. Immediately, you begin to feel faint. Along with a surge of emotions, you’re dizzy, sweaty, and weak.
When you think back to something like this, you might discover that criticism and disapproval are two of your triggers. In fact, these are two very common triggers.

Once you’ve begun to identify these specific triggers, it’s time to find out where they come from! Tracing these triggers and identifying their origins will help you challenge the beliefs that made them triggers in the first place.
